Free Workshop 2/4/12  @1-2:30

Roots of Rhythm Circle

This free workshop would involve the participants in choosing a sound or percussive device to assume a sound or rhythm of an animal or insect. Then spread everyone in different parts of the space. Have all communicate by sound and rhythm assuming identities of their sound maker.

As following sessions develop, participants could change sounds and learn basic rhythms by mimicking the sounds of different animals moving at different paces. These rhythms would be arranged to show how animal rhythms became beats to say things across distances.
The basic nature of rhythm in music and rhythm notation would be developed. Counting, sounding and pausing, connecting the rhythms of music and nature by using different sounding percussion devices. At this point the ensemble would develop little pieces of percussion music being directed by flash card and metronome direction.
